"I'm Sick of Digging Holes" is a song off an EP that I released over the summer, "Blindish". Also I'm Psychic is not a static band with well-defined members; it's a collaborative project between me (Anjali Nair) and other musicians that I know. Since many of my friends and acquaintances are talented musicians, I wanted to involve as many of them as possible in the effort. So, on each song, a different musician pal (or two, or three) contributed his or her instrumentation. Though I initially wrote the songs and lyrics, I can't possibly call this a "solo project" because everyone who lent their talent really elevated the songs beyond their original state and in the true spirit of collaboration, made them far more dynamic piece of art. I hope to continue this project by releasing more EPs whenever I get the chance, wherever I find people who are interested. "I'm Sick of Digging Holes" features Dante Cimino (of 90s grunge band Dandelion fame) on drums, myself on guitar and vocals, and Billie Seeland on bass.
Why is feminism important to you?
Feminism is important to me, as it should be to every woman, man, and gender non-conformist because ultimately what it demands is equality. The whole gender binary is so obviously a social construct, an antiquated and patriarchal model meant to pigeon-hole people into acting according to societal expectations. It holds women down, promoting a culture of misogyny and male supremacy. But women have always been strong, powerful, beautiful. We can take all this frustration, these centuries of oppression, and channel it towards productive cause. We make it despite the odds. We do it one better, because we have to and because we can. It's about time the world acknowledged it. Of course, there is no "universal woman" or a universal set of dreams, ambitions, or passions shared by us all. But what is truly universal is our right to pursue our goals and live our lives without injustice. Without violation of our rights and bodies. Without the imposition of demeaning gender roles and spiteful skepticism. And that's something worth taking a stand for.
