Nightingales are a gender-bending synthgrunge band from Brighton. Taking cues from Bikini Kill, Nirvana, Slutever, and the Ronettes, they mix raw political noise with catchy melodic hooks, typically with male vocals feminised using vocoders and distortion. 100% pure cane sugar.


Why is feminism important to you?

Marc Lepine was a spree killer who murdered fourteen women, believing them to be feminists, at an engineering school in Montreal. When you type his name into Google, the algorithm suggests the word most commonly searched alongside it: hero.
I find it interesting that MRAs will decry the entire concept of feminism when one woman makes a tweet they don't like - because all women are feminists, and all feminists are the same - when they're so quick to remind us that #NotAllMen are misogynists. Even when their entire movement is linked with internet harassment, death threats, and modern-day Lepines.
To be honest, I cringe when men self-identify as feminists. We've got to start our own thing. But men need feminism, now more than ever. The patriarchy has made the switch from defending its legitimacy to denying its existence. A lot of men (typically middle class, typically white), are angry about their own inability to conform to masculine ideals, and they're buying into this ridiculous idea that women are the oppressors. It's embarrassing to see how tenaciously feminists have always fought, refusing to re-direct their anger at themselves or pass it down the chain. But it's also inspiring. And it gives us something to aim for. That's one reason why feminism is important.
